What does a Chocodelic Trip taste like?

Chocodelic Trip tastes similar to traditional dark chocolate cocoa, with a deeper finish from the array of unique mushrooms included. We use a dark Dutch Cocoa in this recipe, as well as real Madagascar vanilla bean powder + organic cane sugar (one of our few recipes with cane sugar!). While the Dutch Cocoa is a darker, more astringent version than lighter milk chocolates, the vanilla bean and cane sugar bring a familiar sweet flavor dynamic, making this more of a semi-bitter cocoa vs. a true dark chocolate. Chocodelic Trip is the #1 adult hot cocoa.

Tasting Notes: Dark chocolate, hints of espresso, sweet vanilla, sweet cane sugar

What are the benefits of Chocodelic Trip?

Chocodelic Trip is a very unique  CBD hot cocoa. Using a series of health-focused ingredients, including an adaptogenic blend of 10 synergistic mushrooms, this cocoa is crafted to be both delicious & healthy. Our mushrooms are carefully selected for their support of a healthy immune system, making this way more unique than your average cocoa. The Dutch Cocoa used also contains high amounts of Vitamin B, riboflavin and vitamin K. This cocoa also contains minerals like magnesium, potassium, and zinc.

What are adaptogenic mushrooms?

Mushrooms are a very unique eukaryotic species, as they contain chitin within their cell walls (the same thing that makes up insect exoskeletons!). More intriguing, however, is how adaptogenic mushrooms are used around the world. Most research has looked at the potential benefits of polysaccharides, including beta-glucans. “Adaptogens” are herbs, fungi, or other compounds that generally support healthy reactions to stressors in the body. Other well-known examples of adaptogens are ginseng or ashwagandha

Where are the mushrooms from & how are they cultivated?

The mushrooms included in Chocodelic Trip are made from finely ground mycelium and fruiting bodies, cultivated on a brown rice base locally here in Portland, Oregon. Each batch is rigorously screened for purity & safety, and these are some of highest quality bioavailable medicinal mushroom products available. The diverse composite of active constituents contained – which includes mushrooms like Chaga, Reishi, and Cordyceps – are an excellent way to support a healthy body, and this rich cocoa is one of the most delicious ways to enjoy them!

When should I drink CBD hot cocoa?

Chocodelic Trip contains caffeine, due to its cocoa content (typically, 1 scoop contains about 1/10th that of a cup of coffee). Due to its lower content, you can drink Chocodelic Trip any time of the day. While we think it is a great beverage to enjoy in the evening, adding a scoop to morning coffee is one of our founders’ favorite ways to incorporate mushrooms & get an extra boost to start the day.

The History of Hot Chocolate

Mayan’s were drinking hot chocolate as early as 500 B.C. It was made from ground cocoa seeds, water, cornmeal, and chili peppers, a lot different than the hot chocolate that drink today.  They would mix it by pouring it back and forth in a pot until it created a frothy thick foam, and then they would enjoy the beverage cold.  This was a beverage that was available to people of all class levels.

Cocoa Beans and chocolate made its way to Europe in the early 1500s. The drink remained cold and bitter. It gained even more popularity when it was adopted by King Charles V and the royalty in Spain. After this, it started to be served hot and sweetened.

Hot Chocolate made its way to England in the 1700s. They were popular in chocolate houses (similar to coffee shops today). It became increasingly popular despite the price of chocolate. The English started to add milk into their hot chocolate beverage, and enjoyed it after dinner. This is closer to what we know today!

Cocoa powder was invented in Holland, and the Dutch controlled nearly the entire chocolate trade. Dutch Processed Cocoa (European style), which we use in our Chocodelic Trip, is cocoa that has been treated with an alkalizing agent reducing the natural acidity.  It is rich in flavor, with a smoother and milder flavor profile. It is often used in recipes like cakes, and even used in spice rubs.
