Genmaicha is a Japanese Green Tea with brown rice kernels. The blend of the rice and the green tea balances out the astringent flavor with a warm nutty flavor of roasted rice. Sometimes it is referred to as “popcorn tea”. There are a lot of different origin stories of Genmaicha, some dating as far back to the 15th Century Japan, but the most probable and common story of Genmaicha is that  toasted rice was added to Green Tea in the 1900s as a way of stretching tea during times of hardship.  It is high in antioxidants and has an array of carotenoids and ascorbic acid.

Rose Petals have been used for medicinal and cultural purposes for centuries. There are over 130 species of roses and thousands of cultivars. They are high in antioxidants, polyphenols and gallic acid.

Rosehips are one of the oldest plants! They are fruits from a rose that appear in early summer and begin to ripen throughout late autumn. They begin to develop on wild roses and the flowers begin to drop off. They are a rich source of vitamin C.

Blackberry Leaf is most commonly recognized for their delicious summer berries, but the leaves are also great. The leaves are high in vitamin C and hydrolysable tannins and flavonoids.

Lemongrass is an aromatic and uplifting herb.It is also called citronell. It contains antioxidants and  was commonly used as a folk remedy.

The History of Genmaicha

There are a lot of different origin stories of Genmaicha, some dating as far back as the 15th Century Japan. The first legend centers around a servant who had some rice grains hidden up his sleeve, the grains of rice fell out  when he was serving his master an expensive cup of tea.

The second tale is of housewives around the same period, who would mix cheap brown rice into expensive green tea so that common people and their households  could enjoy the expensive tea and it would allow them to stretch the tea so it would last longer.

However, the most probable and common story of Genmaicha is that  toasted rice was added to Green Tea in the 1900s as a way of stretching tea during times of hardship and war. This was an easy way to make the tea last longer.
